What is Spyware?

Spyware is one of the most common forms of malicious software (malware). The software is installed on a personal computer to intercept or take control of the computer covertly, without the user’s permission.

What can spyware do?

Browsing and downloading software from the Internet is convenient, fun and safe, as long as uninvited software, or ‘spyware’, does not come with it. Spyware can be installed onto a personal computer in many ways i.e. downloading or installing software such as ActiveX applets, attachments from email etc.

It can be used to collect and transmit personal or security information such as user names, passwords, email addresses, credit card numbers etc.

It can install additional malware, redirect your web browser, access random websites (which may install more harmful viruses), cause ‘pop-up’ windows to appear etc.

It can change computer settings, slow connection speeds to the Internet, create different home pages, and cause the loss of the Internet or other programs.

Identity theft occurs when someone steals your personal information (online or offline) and uses this information to carry out a fraud. Once an individual has your personal information, they may sell it on to a criminal; use it to apply for credit in your name or simply buy goods using your credit card details.

It’s hard to keep your personal information private when surfing and transacting on the Internet but you can limit the information you give out and still enjoy the experience.

Tips to help you protect yourself

When disposing of a Personal Computer ensure the hard drive has been securely wiped. Reformatting the hard drive may not be adequate.

When using social networking websites ensure that you limit the personal information you provide about yourself.

Do not supply personal or security information (i.e. Usernames, Passwords, Name, Address, Phone Numbers,) on emails or through phone calls requesting such information.

Only share your primary email address with people you know and tell them it is private.

Set up a specific email address for shopping, newsgroups, marketing etc.

Only make online purchases from companies that have a clear privacy policy.

Use a strong password and do not share it with anyone. A random combination of numbers, letters and special characters with at least 8 characters and changed regularly is recommended.

Keep a record of what information you have supplied and to whom.

Notify your financial institution(s) immediately.

A Trojan, sometimes referred to as a Trojan horse, is non-self-replicating malware (in other words, it does not spread like a virus), that appears to perform a desirable function for the user but instead facilitates unauthorised access to the user’s computer system. The term is derived from the Trojan horse story in Greek mythology. A trojan can gather and send personal or security information entered on the infected Computer. A Trojan usually gains access to a computer when the user is tricked into opening or running a file they downloaded or received from a seemingly legitimate source.

How do Trojans work?

The Trojan sits on your computer unknown to you, recording and transmitting personal information, such as your Account log in details for various websites e.g Facebook, Twitter, Internet Banking.

Once the Trojan has gathered your log in details the fraudster can now log in and make unauthorised transfers from your bank account, post and take change personal information on any log in accounts online e.g Facebook, Twitter, MySpace.

Beware!

DO NOT open or download software/images from an unsolicited email or untrustworthy websites.

DO NOT use a computer that you do not trust to log in to your internet banking, facebook, twitter, A computer that is open to easy public access like those in internet cafés.

Ensure you have up-to-date anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall software intalled on your computer.

What is a Virus?

A computer virus is a program that attaches itself to another program or data file on your computer in order to spread and reproduce itself without the user(s) knowledge. The effects of these viruses can vary widely depending on what they were designed to do. Some viruses cause little or no damage, while others can be very dangerous.

How do Viruses work?

Viruses are designed to hide their presence in legitimate programs or data files.

They are usually spread from computer to computer by users who are unaware they are doing so through email attachments, downloading files from the Internet, using infected CDs, USB keys, floppy disks etc.

Although some viruses are not dangerous (e.g. harmless pop-up windows or advertisements on your PC), a growing number of more sophisticated and dangerous viruses are becoming more widespread which can lead to the following;

- Reduction in network performance

- Confidential data being passed to an unauthorised third party via email

Phishing is a common technique used by fraudsters in an attempt to obtain personal and security information for the purpose of identity theft or financial gain. The fraudsters use email messages that appear to come from legitimate businesses in an attempt to fool you into supplying your personal details. Financial institutions are frequently targeted by these types of attacks.

How do Phishing emails work?

NEVER CLICK ON A LINK/OPEN AN ATTACHMENT
The fraudster sends you an email pretending to be from a legitimate source (e.g. Corporate Business)
The email contains a link or attachment and requests you to click on the link or download the attachment to complete a specific action, e.g. ‘re-activate your account’, ‘update your security details’ etc
When you click on the link or download the attachment you are brought to a FAKE website where you are required to input a range of personal and security details e.g. Email Username, Password details and any codes that the Corporate Business site may require
Once the details are entered into this FAKE website, the fraudster has full access to your account (e.g Internet Banking, Facebook, Twitter or any Corporate Business) as you, therefore gaining advantage over your finance, personal information, identity, details

How can I prevent myself being a victim of phishing?

The important thing is to be suspicious of all unsolicited or unexpected emails you receive, even if they appear to originate from a trusted source.
NEVER CLICK ON A LINK/OPEN AN ATTACHMENT in an email to log in to Financial Institutes (e.g AIB)
They will never ask you to complete an action (e.g. ‘reconfirm’, ‘validate’, ‘unlock’) by clicking on a link in an email and visiting a website.
Stop to think about how your Corporate Business normally communicates with you and never disclose your log in details or Passwords details to anyone.
If you receive a Phishing email delete it immediately and contact the Corporate Business you believe its from.
